  Browser caches (browser quit first)
  Thumbnails/media caches of apps you can reopen
  Developer build caches when actively oversized

HANDLE WITH CARE
  ~/Library/Caches subfolders: per-app, not blanket
  Sync placeholders (may be real upstream files)

NEVER BY HAND
  System-owned caches (/System/Library/Caches)
  Kernel caches
  Time Machine local snapshots without documented cause

REMEMBER
  Quit the owning application before deleting anything.
  Delete contents selectively; verify the app relaunches sane.
